Fifth Grade: United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America

The World in Our Backyard is extremely proud of our 45-60 minute program developed for fifth grade students to enhance their study of Native Americans and Mexico.
Our in-school field trips were developed to support the NC Course of Study competency goals and objectives and to engage students in a creative and energetic way through the use of photographs, artifacts, cultural costumes and traditional music.

.
NATIVE AMERICANS
Covering six regions, we explore the impact of geographical features and native plants and animals on the lives of the early Native Americans — the homes they built, the tools they used, the food they ate, and the clothing they wore. Students dress in regional costumes and participate in a Pow Wow, complete with drumming and dancing. The regions are: the Arctic, North West, South West, Plains, South East and North East

.
MEXICO
We discuss the geographical features and native plants and animals of Mexico as well as their importance to early civilizations. Students are introduced to the Spanish Conquest and the decline of the Aztec Empire. The clothing, food, occupations, housing, transportation, music and entertainment of modern Mexico are experienced. Dressed in costumes from ancient to modern times, students participate in a festive Mexican folklore dance. The covered influences are: Aztec Empire, Spanish Conquest, Modern Mexico and Immigration

The cost is $5 a student with a minimum charge of $250.

.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Union, Lincoln, Cabarrus and Stanley County schools have made our programs available to their students using PTA support, student payments, and/or grant money.

We also offer Africa, Australia, China, Ecuador, Egypt, Italy, Mexico, Native Americans, the Netherlands and Peru at $5 a student.
